EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Contra Costa Interfaith Supporting Community Organization (CCISCO):

Contra Costa Interfaith Supporting Community Organization (CCISCO) is committed to building civic engagement and increasing public participation by those most affected by injustice and inequity in Contra Costa County. As an organization, we believe in the power of relationships and that by acting together on our common values, we can imagine and create a new world.

CCISCO is a countywide nonprofit that helps everyday people win extraordinary victories by providing a vehicle for them to speak, act and engage in public arenas. Since 1996, we have been organizing a voice for justice and equity in Contra Costa County. We are a multi-ethnic, multi-generational, interfaith federation of 30 congregations and youth institutions representing over 35,000 families. CCISCO is a member of the PICO National Network and PICO California.

CCISCO Countywide Overview of work in the past year:

  • Invest in People, Not Prisons:  we helped to stop the proposed jail expansion in Contra Costa County and secured $5.2 million for bail reform; re-entry services; employment and housing for formerly incarcerated;
  • Reclaim California’s Future:  Our work in helping to pass Proposition 47 by leading the largest volunteer-led civic engagement effort in the county and state;
  • Keeping Families in their Homes:  we played a key role in supporting the passage of the California Homeowner Bill of Rights;
  • Keeping Families United:  Secure agreement with Contra Costa Sheriff Livingston to develop new detainer policy and stop the detention and deportation of Contra Costa residents;
  • Health Access:  Maintaining the success of the new health clinic in Oakley which has served over 2,900 families;
  • Immigrant Integration:  we organized 8 clinics with 1,600 DREAMers for Deferred Action and organized citizenship drives to support 465 new citizens;
  • Ceasefire-Lifelines to Healing:  launch of Ceasefire-Lifelines to Healing movement in Richmond and East County and organized over 200 Night walks with over 1,800 participants and has contributed to over 60% decrease in homicides and injury shootings since March 2012.

 

Responsibilities:

The Executive Director is an energetic, self-motivated position that requires the capacity to work on the ground level of the organization as well as the capacity to develop staff, board, and leaders. The position requires the ability to develop long-term relationships with a diverse volunteer population, clergy, elected officials and key stakeholders. Lastly, this management role assumes the responsibility to support leaders and staff in order to maintain the organization’s winning track record by overseeing organizing campaigns around immigration, foreclosures, health access, education, mass incarceration/re-entry, and violence prevention that take place across county.

The Executive Director position is responsible for managing the daily operations of the organization county-wide, and is supervised by the CCISCO Board of Directors. The Executive Director will be held accountable for overseeing the following critical responsibilities:

  •  Hire, manage, and develop CCISCO staff
  • Work and support all CCISCO leaders in order to create successful campaigns
  • Provide leadership with the tools to develop vision and goals to implement effective campaigns
  • Maintain the CCISCO budget and develop a plan to continue its successful expansion
  • Have capacity to seek donations from individuals and corporations through fundraising events
  • Manage existing grants while developing a plan to expand and diversify CCISCO’s funding
  • Work with the board and staff to maintain financial stability of the organization
  • Build coalitions with elected officials, policy leaders and other strategic allies

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years organizing experience, preferably in PICO National Network
  • At least 3 years of congregation-based organizing experience, successful staff supervision and development, campaign victories and financial management
  • Respect for diversity, ability to motivate large groups and a strong commitment to social justice
  • History of embracing fundraising and diversifying funding sources
  • Proven track record of successful grant writing
  • Ability to navigate through political environment, familiarity with Contra Costa County communities and knowledge of the key issues they face is preferred
  • Knowledge of legislative process at city, state, and national levels
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Spanish fluency is preferred

Salaries & Benefits:

Salary and benefits are competitive and are based on level of experience.

Guest commentary: How Richmond could become Baltimore or not

The protests that recently engulfed Baltimore have sparked a much needed debate about the systemic problems that plague too many American cities.

As many commentators have rightly noted, the tragic death of Freddie Gray was not the sole cause of this civil unrest. While it was undeniably the spark, it was the conditions of hopelessness and powerlessness that have plagued West Baltimore (and too many other American cities) for decades that provided the fuel.

These conditions were brought about by the loss of a once-thriving manufacturing sector, by failing schools, a lack of economic opportunity, a deeply flawed criminal justice system, unemployment and poverty that far exceed state and national averages and the failure of political leaders to do anything about it.

It’s not as if they did not have an opportunity to do so.

Some parts of Baltimore — particularly on the north and east sides of town — have been the beneficiaries of billions of dollars in public and private investment: expanding Johns Hopkins University, redeveloping the waterfront area, Camden Yards, and the list goes on.

When this happened, few protections were in place to keep low-income local residents from being displaced from their homes and replaced by more affluent new arrivals willing to pay higher prices. Workers were brought in from out of town to work on the projects. Critical investments in public education and workforce development — to prepare local for the jobs that new development would present — were woefully inadequate at best.

And as a result, poverty in West Baltimore became even more concentrated — increasing by 30 percent since 1970. It was and remains a virtual powder keg just waiting to explode. It ruptured in 1968, and again late last month.

Sadly, many of the same underlying dynamics exist today a little closer to home — in Richmond.

Though considerably smaller, Richmond is like Baltimore in many ways. It is a majority-minority city. It has an industrial past that has left economic and environmental consequences that persist to this day. And like too many parts of Baltimore, Richmond is plagued by high poverty, high crime, high unemployment and underperforming schools.

But perhaps most important, Richmond is on the precipice of its own multibillion-dollar development project — an expansion of UC Berkeley — that could either help address these underlying conditions or perpetuate them.

To their credit, the people of Richmond clearly recognize this. Everyone from the City Council and faith leaders, to community, labor and student groups have come together to demand that UC Berkeley sign a legally binding Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) that would ensure this project addresses the very same community needs that continue to afflict Baltimore.

This kind of agreement would guarantee the new project offers living wage jobs for local residents, procurement policies that support local businesses, protections against mass displacement, and expanded educational and mentoring opportunities for local youth.

In short, it would guarantee a win-win — both for UC Berkeley, and for Richmond.

But despite more than a year of pleas by community members, UC Berkeley has thus far refused to sit down and negotiate such an agreement. Instead, it has asked for $100 million in investment from local taxpayers, and hand picked a so called “working group” to pay lip service to the community’s demands, without offering any concrete commitments.

This is not good enough.

By signing a legally binding CBA with Richmond, UC Berkeley has the power to heed the lessons of Baltimore and to set a new national standard for urban renewal.

This simple step would also be an important demonstration of good faith at a time when UC is asking for more public investment and facing mounting criticism over its commitment to communities of color.

To be clear, I am not questioning this commitment — I am counting on it.

Over the last two years we have seen incredible transformations across Contra Costa County through our work at CCISCO, and now we believe we have built a digital platform to feature and lift up that beautiful work.  We are very excited about the new site and we wanted to draw your attention to a few key features on it.  On the campaigns pages we are able to keep you up to date with each of the different campaigns going on where you can find the history of these campaigns and you can easily join any of the CCISCO campaign emails lists just by putting in your email on the campaign page.  If you click on the Social stream you will be taken to a page where you can see all of our feeds from Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in one place.  On the home page scroll down and you will see some beautiful stories about a number of our powerful leaders at CCISCO which we will be continuously updating throughout the year. Scroll down further and you will find all the upcoming CCISCO events.

We also hope to make this a space for community wide learning, so we have embedded a number of trainings and key links on the Training page. Our next goal now that we have launched the site is to translate it into Spanish so we can make a parallel Spanish site.
